What does the evidence leave open?

Partial identification describes situations in which the available evidence and stated assumptions restrict a quantity to a set of possible values, rather than determine one value. The width of that set expresses what remains unresolved.

Partial identification

For a known participation share s, an observed positive share p, and an unrestricted silent group q, the population positive share is s × p + (1 − s) × q. Allowing q from zero to one gives the interval [s × p, s × p + 1 − s].
